Golden Grain Inn
The World of Greyhawk & The World of Greyhawk Wiki
The current year for our World of Greyhawk campaign is set during 579CY.
Inspired By Gary Gygax

The Golden Grain is a large, weathered inn located near the edge of Orlane, serving as one of the village's less reputable establishments. While it remains a functioning inn and tavern, most locals view it as a place best avoided unless one has no better options. The building itself is an aging wooden structure with peeling whitewash and faded yellow carvings of wheat sheaves decorating the eaves.

A swinging sign depicting a bundle of grain and a frothing pitcher hangs above the entrance, creaking loudly whenever the wind picks up. Nearby stand a stable, a small corral, and an outhouse, all of which appear serviceable but poorly maintained. The inn is owned by Bertram Beswill, a nervous and unpleasant man whose reputation does little to improve the standing of his establishment.

Bertram has a habit of watching patrons a little too closely and often seems more interested in gathering information than providing hospitality. Though not openly hostile, he rarely appears genuinely welcoming and is known throughout Orlane for being secretive and untrustworthy. Many villagers prefer to conduct business elsewhere, leaving the Golden Grain dependent upon travelers, laborers, gamblers, and others who care little about local opinion.

Inside, the common room is dimly lit even during daylight hours. Heavy curtains block much of the natural light, while smoke from the hearth and numerous pipes tends to linger beneath the ceiling. The furnishings are sturdy but worn, with tables scarred by years of abuse and chairs that seem one hard sit away from collapse. The food is edible, the ale is strong, and the rooms are adequate enough for a night's sleep, though cleanliness is not among the inn's strengths. Most guests find the atmosphere uncomfortable without being able to clearly explain why.

Despite its shortcomings, the Golden Grain remains a popular gathering place for certain segments of Orlane's population. Travelers seeking discretion, merchants looking to avoid questions, and rougher sorts passing through the region often find themselves drinking beneath its roof. Rumors, gossip, and questionable business deals flow as freely as the ale, making the inn a valuable source of information for those willing to tolerate its surroundings. While respectable citizens generally prefer other establishments, the Golden Grain endures as a place where secrets change hands, strangers keep to themselves, and not every conversation is meant to be overheard.
