The Dark Domain is the name given to the vast network of tunnels, caverns, and passageways that surround Orthae Qu'lith for nearly five miles in every direction. Considered an extension of the city's authority, these tunnels serve as the first line of defense against external threats and provide critical routes for trade, military patrols, and exploration.

Although the region lies beyond the city's walls, travelers quickly discover that the influence of Orthae Qu'lith extends far into the surrounding Underdark. Drow patrols maintain a constant presence throughout the Dark Domain, ensuring that the territory remains firmly under the city's control.

Soldiers, scouts, and priestesses regularly traverse the tunnels searching for dangerous monsters, escaped slaves, forbidden creatures, and surface dwellers foolish enough to venture too close to the city. Any suspicious individual encountered within the Dark Domain is likely to be questioned, challenged, or eliminated outright depending upon the circumstances and the whims of the patrol leader.

To strengthen their hold over the region, the drow have established a number of fortified guard outposts throughout the tunnel network. These small strongholds serve as supply depots, defensive positions, and staging grounds for military operations. Garrisoned by experienced warriors, they allow the city to monitor traffic through the tunnels while providing rapid response forces whenever threats emerge from the deeper reaches of the Underdark. The Dark Domain is also strategically important due to the numerous routes that connect it to the surface world.

At least ten known tunnel systems eventually reach the lands above, each closely watched by the drow. Some passages emerge in remote wilderness regions, while others pass near enemy strongholds and rival settlements. One particularly important route leads toward the Dim Forest, making it a valuable avenue for raids, scouting missions, and the movement of agents between the surface and the depths below. Through control of these passages, Orthae Qu'lith maintains both its security and its ability to project power far beyond the Underdark.
